What is adaptive snowsports?

Adaptive snowsports involves modifying equipment and techniques to enable individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities to participate in snowsports like skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing.

Is there an age limit?

No. We facilitate experiences for athlete’s of all ages.

Can you recommend a suitable sport for my disability?

Yes we can- Please contact us to discuss how best to get you out on the mountain and outdoors.

Where are the lessons?

All ski, snowboard, and sit-ski lessons take place at Revelstoke Mountain
Resort. Nordic ski lessons will take place at Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club.

When are the lessons?

Our availability is flexible, We will do our best to accommodate your requests. 

How long are the lessons?

We offer morning, afternoon, and all day lessons.

Are these private or group lessons?

Generally our lessons will be private(Single student). If you have friends who are adaptive athletes, with a similar level, we can potentially organise a “group lesson”.

What if I don't have any equipment?

Our Programs include rental ski or snowboard equipment, including sit skis or any other specialised adaptive gear. We can also provide helmets. The specific equipment needed varies depending on the individual’s disability and the type of snowsport they want to do.

What specialised equipment do you have?

We have a fleet of sit skis, a snowslider, various tethers, outriggers, balance aids, sensory helmets, googles, and gloves, sign cards and radios. 

What's a Sit-Ski?

A sit-ski is an adaptive snowsport device that allows individuals with limited lower body strength or mobility to participate in skiing. It provides seated support and independent mobility for those for whom extended standing is not an option. Sit-skis can be used independently with outriggers or steered by a certified instructor.

What should I Wear? You will need to bring warm, waterproof ski clothing, goggles or sunglasses,gloves and socks. It can get cold here- Please dress warmly!

Do I need a helmet?

Helmets must be worn when on our program. We can provide a helmet from the Resort if you need.

What if I don't have a season pass?

A day lift pass for Revelstoke Mountain Resort is provided with each program fee.

Do you arrange transport to and from the mountain?

No. for our locals program, we recommend utilising the Handi Dart. Our instructors will meet you at the mountain.

Is there accessible parking at Revelstoke Mountain Resort?

Yes. It is conveniently located next to the Guest Services.

Where is the meeting point for lessons?

Your instructors will meet you outside the Guest Services. 

Are your instructors and volunteers police vetted?

Yes. All volunteers have completed a recent Criminal Record Check with the RCMP.

Can my Parent/friend/Support worker join the lesson?

Yes, but they would need to purchase a ski pass.

How much does this cost?

Our Locals program is $15 (this will increase) per day. Our visitors program is $90 (this might increase as well) per day.

What level is required for the Big Mountain Sit Ski Camp?

You must be an advanced, independent sit skier, capable of riding blue, black runs and off piste in all conditions to attend the Big Mountain Camp

How is this program funded?

We are a not for profit that relies on donations, sponsorship and grants.

Volunteers

How do I sign up as a volunteer?

What on-snow volunteer roles are you looking for?

Our on snow roles are classified as such: Certified instructor, and non-certified instructor. A certified instructor will always be the “lead” instructor, with non certified instructors in support when required.

What's the difference between  “certified instructor” and a “non certified instructor”?

A certified instructor will have a Canadian Adaptive Snowsports qualification and be responsible for the participant during a lesson. A non certified instructor can assist the certified instructor and participant in a support capacity during the lesson.

How do I get certified?

We provide the opportunity to participate in the Canadian Adaptive Ski Level 1 program each winter in Revelstoke, after which you would earn the Canadian Adaptive Ski or Snowboard Instructor Level 1 Certification. This can be completed on skis or a snowboard.

I am not a confident skier, does that matter? 

No. we have athletes of all abilities that participate in the program. We would not assign you to a lesson that was not a suitable match.

Are there any benefits to volunteering?

Yes. Being part of the RADS family would give you access to our volunteer appreciation events, various discounts around town and pro deals through the CADS National membership. Being a RADS member also grants you access to the Revelstoke ambassador program. The true benefit is knowing the difference you make to our participants' lives.

Do I have to commit to the whole season?

Our on snow volunteer options are flexible. Ideally we would like you to volunteer at least once every 2 weeks or 8 times per season

Are there any costs involved?

Yes. However our organisation will cover them for you. That is why we ask for some commitment over the course of the winter.

Do I need a season pass?

Yes.

Are Uniforms supplied?

Yes. We will provide a jacket, and storage space for your equipment on the mountain.

Can I volunteer if I don't have a work Visa?

Yes. You will still be required to complete a Criminal Record Check with the RCMP.

I don't ski, are there any other volunteer opportunities available?

Yes. We are a busy organisation and always on the lookout for event staff, fundraisers, web and graphic designers, videographers, high five givers and all round good people who thrive while helping their community.

I only snowboard, can I still volunteer?

Yes. We have snowboard athletes on the program!
